Bikes on Amtrak!

June 1, 2016

Beginning May 1 people can bring their bikes on Amtrak’s Vermonter, which runs between St. Albans, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., with service to other major cities including Philadelphia and New York City. This project is the first of its kind in the Northeast. As a pilot project there are limited spaces for bikes, and officials will later determine whether there is a need to add more space, as well as determine where along the route.

In the past bicyclists have been able to bring their bikes on the Vermonter, but they have had to do so as luggage, which required an extra step. Advocates wanted state transportation officials to seek more bike access to trains, with a goal of linking modes of transportation to facilitate travel, both for pleasure and commuting.

Reservations are required and passengers with bikes must have a special ticket, the Vermont Agency of Transportation said. An “add bike” option is available while booking on or by calling 800-USA-RAIL, the agency added.
